Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a method of stimulating the tissue beneath the skin’s surface using very high frequency sound waves.  This type of treatment has been used effectively since the 1940’s.  There are three primary benefits to therapeutic ultrasound. The first is the speeding up of the healing process.  This occurs from the increase in blood flow that occurs in the treated area. The second is the decrease in pain by reducing swelling and edema in the injured area. Third is the gentle massage of muscles tendons and/ or ligaments in the treated area because no strain is added and any scar tissue is softened. These three benefits are achieved by two main effects of therapeutic ultrasound. The two types of effects are: thermal and non thermal effects. Thermal effects cause increased healing since heat speeds healing of tissue and non-thermal effects help break up scarring and long term tissue damage.
